1998 - Thousands view AIDS quilt at Lynn Vocational and Technical High
Maureen Spagnoli of Lynn organized the day to focus on young people’s issues with AIDS. Calling the day “a resounding success,” she gave a shout out to LVTH students for setting up much of the exhibit and returning at night to read the “names” of Lynners affected. Teacher Diane Conlon’s kids guided groups of students through the exhibit.

1994 - St. Pius V makes a panel for the AIDS quilt
The welcoming congregation of St. Pius V Catholic Church served AIDS victims when other churches would not. They contributed a panel to the National AIDS Memorial Quilt, saying:
"Our local funeral director and our parish community are welcoming to all people and as a result the AIDS Action Committee often referred people to us.
We have not placed any names on our panel so as not to leave someone off and out of respect for those who desire privacy. Our prayers, love and concern travel with this panel.”

According to this article, AIDS spread in Lynn starting in 1983. Although often called a "gay disease" at the time, it also spread from IV drug use and unprotected sex, including sex with a prostitute.

The first mention of AIDS in the Lynn Item was a very brief article noting a new disease, AIDS, affecting primarily gay men and IV drug users and calling it the "Gay Plague."
