Denae's Dad clapping at her wedding ceremony
This photo is important to me as it took place at my wedding and it meant a lot to have my Dad (and entire family) there. My dad is also gay and later in the day he read my coming out letter to everyone at my wedding (as a surprise). He and my mother being married and eventually separating also inspired me to live my life as authentically as possible at an early age to avoid living a life I didn't want.

The ruling required all states to perform and recognize the marriages of same-sex couples,

One year previous, Peter’s moms received the first legal same-sex marriage license in the country. That night, Marcia, fighting back tears, said, “There’s a kid somewhere that’s watching this. It’s going to change his whole life.” A year later, Peter had become an eloquent spokesperson for the children of gay and lesbian parents. (Marcia Hams quoted in Yvonne Abraham and Rick Klein, “Free to Marry –Historic Date Arrives,” Boston Globe, 17 May 2004.)
