In 1979, the Lynn Item runs a four part series about being gay. Local businessman and politician, Jay Gilbert, came out publicly for the article. Previously, Gilbert ran for Lynn city council at large in 1969, state representative for 9th Essex in 1970, and state representative for 1st Essex in 1971.
