2013 - Supreme Court strikes down Defense of Marriage Act
The U.S. Supreme Court declared a section of the Defense of Marriage Act, DOMA, unconstitutional under the Due Process Clause, thereby requiring the federal government to recognize same-sex marriages conducted by the states. Two years later, the Court held that same-sex marriage was a fundamental right protected by both the Due Process Clause and the Equal Protection Clause. The ruling required all states to perform and recognize the marriages of same-sex couples,

2010 - "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" repealed
Don't Ask, Don't Tell was repealed, allowing LGBTQ Americans to serve openly in the military. The policy prohibited military personnel from discriminating against or harassing closeted homosexual or bisexual service members or applicants, while barring openly gay, lesbian, or bisexual persons from military service. Instituted during the Clinton administration, the policy was in effect from February 28, 1994, until September 20, 2011.

2003 - Supreme Court strikes down Texas sodomy law
In a landmark decision, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that sanctions of criminal punishment for consensual, adult non-procreative sexual activity (commonly referred to as sodomy laws) are unconstitutional. The Court reaffirmed the concept of a "right to privacy.”

1996 - Defense of Marriage Act passed
The Defense of Marriage Act is signed into law by President Bill Clinton on September 21, 1996, banning federal recognition of same-sex marriage by limiting the definition of marriage to the union of one man and one woman. It further allowed states to refuse to recognize same-sex marriages granted under the laws of other states.

Massachusetts representative Barney Frank becomes the second member of Congress to come out as gay but the first to do so willingly. After coming out, he was re-elected by his district many times and has been a champion for civil and gay and lesbian rights.
